BRONZE AGE / modern AGE minor KEYS…. how TO find continued growth using GOCOLLECT’S data

With all of the modern-day hype from movies that are in progress, we can take a step back and look at a few books that are under the radar with room for continued growth. What can we learn from the data that GoCollect offers? Let’s take a look at some Bronze Age & modern Age minor Keys.

The modern era of Comics

Now don’t get me wrong I love the wild rides of the modern movie hype books. I spend plenty of time speculating myself. but what about that solid growth with limited risk? While some of these modern books may become keys their price points reflect that they already are. What about those Blue Chip Books? wonderful investments, but not everyone can throw down a pile of cash for fantastic fantasy #15. So how do you build a quality collection with upside potential, limited risk, and not breaking the budget? Data…. and GoCollect makes it as easy as a push of a button.

Avengers #221 July, 1982 – “New Blood”

Let’s take a close look at our first example. With all the hype surrounding She Hulk’s new movie, this is a sleeping key. storyline quote: “Hawkeye, She-Hulk, I’d like to officially welcome you both. From now on – you’re one of us. We’re one of you. and we’re all – The Avengers!” now not a true 1st appearance but definitely a terrific She-Hulk key issue. and let’s state the obvious…. wonderful cover with a ton of key superheroes. add to that a terrific story and we have the makings of an upcoming key with room for continued growth. fairly low price for now, but for how long? check the data.

Check those boxes as the CGC Census puts only 21 9.8’s on the map. While this has not been a largely graded book, the years in those boxes tend to wear on these types. They were not highly valued during that time and as a result, many of these Bronze Age and even early modern books have been damaged. Newsstand always being the more sought after of the issues. let us take a look at our second example.

Detective Comics #566 September, 1986 – “Know Your Foes”

Very similar in many ways to that of Avengers #221 – A wonderful cover with multiple Villains and Batman (The Dark Knights Rogues Gallery). With all of the growth surrounding the Villains in the DC Universe, this book is set to grow. A wonderful issue that breaks down all of the villains on Batman’s Roster. including Joker, Riddler, Two-Face, killer Moth, mad Hatter, Penguin, Black Mask, Deadshot, Ras Al Ghul, Nocturna, night Slayer, and Poison Ivy. once again we have a book in which the stage is set. wonderful Cover, A variety of key Villains, and of course Batman. Let’s look at the numbers.

Again we see a book that has a very limited supply of CGC 9.8’s at only 65 on the map. again the quantity graded has been fairly low but the key to this book is that dreaded black edge cover. never an easy 9.8 grade. another terrific book with terrific room for continued growth potential. any 9.8 is terrific but if you can find that Newsstand…winner.

Risk Vs. Reward

Although speculation is fun and typically rewarding I also enjoy it when you can count on solid continued growth over a period of time with no real risk. The characters featured in these particular comics have growing fan bases due to the movies and memorabilia. add to that cover desirability and storyline. I admit you will not see the immediate hype growth to that of a Miles Morales or Knull but the risk and the price point make these my risk vs. Reward books of the week.
